Track mileage and expenses from day one
Good records lower your tax bill and show what's worth it.
Records are the difference between guessing and knowing, at tax time and when deciding which gigs to keep.
Keep
- A mileage log: date, purpose, start and end odometer readings
- Receipts for supplies, equipment and fees
- A record of all income by platform or client
- Hours worked, including waiting time
Make it easy
- Use a separate bank account for side income and expenses
- Photograph receipts right away
- Update your tracker once a week
Mileage
For business driving, you can generally deduct either the IRS standard mileage rate or actual car costs. The rate changes each year; check IRS.gov.
General information, not tax advice. Penny Boosters isn't paid by any gig app or platform.
