Guides / Choosing a side gig
Side income basics: realistic expectations
What a side gig can do for your budget, and what it can't.
A side gig can pay down debt, build savings or cover a gap in the budget. It also takes time and energy, and the first months usually earn less than you hope. Going in with realistic expectations makes it far more likely to work.
Good reasons to start
- A specific goal: an emergency fund, a debt, a trip
- A skill or asset you already have: a car, a skill, things to sell
- Spare time you can reliably commit
Before you start
- Decide how many hours a week you can really give it
- Work out costs: gas, supplies, fees, equipment
- Plan to set aside money for taxes from the first dollar
- Check your day job's rules about outside work
Be wary of
Anything promising big money for little effort, asking you to pay to start, or rewarding you mainly for recruiting other people.
