Selling things you own (and flipping)

Quick cash from clutter, and when reselling becomes a business.

5 min read

Selling things you no longer use is one of the simplest ways to raise money. Some people go further and buy items to resell.

Sell smart

  • Clean items and take clear photos in daylight
  • Check sold listings, not asking prices, to set a fair price
  • Meet local buyers in public places, ideally police station exchange zones
  • Don't accept overpayments or checks for more than the price

Taxes

Selling personal items for less than you paid usually isn't taxable income, but keep records. Buying items to resell for profit is a business, and the profit is taxable. Payment apps and marketplaces may send you a Form 1099-K; check the IRS website for current rules.
