Finding your first clients

Start with people who already know you.

5 min read

Most new freelancers get their first work from people they know or from referrals. Platforms can help, but they take a cut and competition is fierce.

Where to start

  • Tell friends, family and former coworkers exactly what you offer
  • Local community groups and bulletin boards
  • Small local businesses that need help but can't hire
  • Freelance platforms: read the fee structure first

Keep them coming back

  • Reply quickly and do what you said, when you said
  • Ask happy clients for a review or referral
  • Keep a simple list of past clients and check in occasionally
