For one week, write down every minute you spend on your side gig: the work, but also waiting for orders, driving to jobs, answering messages and doing admin. Most people find their real hours are a third to a half higher than they thought.

Then put the totals into our true hourly pay calculator. It's the single best way to compare gigs fairly.

Paperwork reminder: third-quarter estimated taxes

If you make estimated tax payments, the third-quarter payment is usually due in mid-September. Check the exact date on IRS.gov. More in Quarterly estimated taxes, explained.

Scam watch: the "task" job

A message offers easy money for rating products or "boosting" apps. After a few small payouts, you're asked to deposit your own money to unlock bigger earnings. You won't get it back. If a job asks you to pay, it's not a job. See Side-gig scams to watch for.
